Search Algorithms: Needle in a Haystack

The next time you find yourself searching for something in the proverbial haystack, remember that Google does this every day.

Search algorithms make it possible for search engines to sift through trillions of webpages and find the pages you more or less want. Over the years, improvements introduced new features to the search engine experience: autocomplete, news results, instant definitions, and even natural language (something pioneered by Ask Jeeves decades ago).

Have you seen what a search algorithm looks like? Google definitely wouldn't show it to the public, as it contains all the secret sauces it has added over the years; nor will any competing search engine, for that matter. Instead, think of it as a flowchart. The algorithm is programmed to follow this flowchart to the end based on the conditions fulfilled.

Nevertheless, you can be assured that the algorithm is working; otherwise, your business wouldn't be in the local listings even if you wanted it to. As more people rely on online search for virtually any task, Google will keep adding new features or improve existing ones to enhance the search experience. This also means adapting to the changing requirements of search engine optimisation (SEO) which, like it or not, will affect your business.

Fortunately, you have SEO companies that have your back and keep a close eye on the latest developments from Google and other search engines. These companies make sure their clients don’t get left out of a new wave of Pandas or Penguins.
